Gettysburg

Advantage to the Union

1863

Until Gettysburg, the Union and Confederate armies had been evenly matched. But after the slaughter there, the Confederacy no longer had the strength to fight off the invading Yankees and the war was lost.

DURING THE FIRST HALF of the nineteenth century, the northern states of the United States become increasingly industrialized, while the southern economy relied on agriculture, principally the production of cotton. This difference was underlined by what was called the 'peculiar institution' of slavery which provided cheap labour in the South. At the same time, improvements in transportation – canals, toll roads and railroads – and the distribution of newspapers was rapidly forging a collection of disparate states into one nation.
